Might be you are facing this issue while configuring appearance setting in RHEL or else from any other reason .
Here is the fix or you can say the workaround for the saame.
Move down to terminal window (ctrl+alt+f2) or else take a ssh session from other host.
Switch to root
su -# root
Type "telinit 3" and it'll kill you down to a login prompt.
Log in as root and type "telinit 5" and you'll be back in GUI land again.
